GNSS and satellite time

Trilateration

Also: trilateratie

Trilateration computes a position from the measured distances to at least four satellites. Each distance places the receiver on a sphere; the intersection of the spheres gives both the location and the time.

That fourth satellite is needed because the receiver's own clock error is solved as an unknown too, which is why GNSS immediately yields an accurate time.
