GNSS and satellite time

Ionospheric delay

When a GNSS signal travels through the ionosphere (the charged upper layer of the atmosphere) it is slightly delayed. That delay depends on solar activity and is the largest natural error source in position and time determination.

Dual-frequency receivers measure and correct the ionospheric delay; SBAS corrections help single-frequency receivers.
