VLBIVLBI

VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) lets radio telescopes on different continents observe the same distant radio source simultaneously. From the tiny difference in arrival time, Earth rotation, plate motions and the celestial reference frame are derived.

Each telescope needs a hydrogen maser as local time base; VLBI is a cornerstone of the measurement of UT1 and of the terrestrial reference frames.
