Protocols and time transfer

NMEA 0183

NMEA 0183 is a communication standard with which GPS and GNSS receivers send data as readable text sentences, for example $GPRMC or $GPZDA with date and time.

Time servers use the NMEA time sentence together with the 1PPS signal: NMEA provides the date and time information, 1PPS the exact second boundary.
