The NTP pool (pool.ntp.org) is a shared cluster of thousands of volunteer time servers that together supply time to most devices worldwide. Through a single DNS name a client is automatically directed to a nearby, available server.

For business-critical applications an own, traceable NTP server is preferred over the public pool, because then one controls the source and the accuracy.
