Latency

Latency is the time that elapses between an event and the response to it, for example between sending and arriving of a network packet. In timing it is not so much the latency itself that is the problem but its variation (jitter), because that is hard to correct.

NTP and PTP estimate the path latency to compensate for it; hardware timestamping minimises the unpredictable component.
