Julian DateJD / MJD

The Julian Date (JD) counts the days (and fractions) since noon on 1 January 4713 BC. This lets astronomers denote any instant unambiguously without the complications of calendars and months.

The Modified Julian Date (MJD = JD − 2,400,000.5) starts at midnight and is often used in time metrology.
